Everyday Miracles
March 18, 2010

Over the last three months my friend, Vince D'Acchioli, the CEO and founder of On Target Ministries, has seen his wife return from the brink of death. He sent me an email earlier this week that provides us all with an amazing insight into the miracles God performs that we often overlook...

It was 5 weeks ago that a doctor shared news that shattered me and my family. After 3 full months watching my wife battle for her life the diagnosis was that she was not going to make it and that I may have to consider a decision to remove her from life support. This news resulted in the worse twenty-four hours I and my family have ever experienced. While I never lost confidence that God was at work I did begin to sense for the first time that His will may be to take her.

At the end of my time of grieving I remember pleading with God. Lord, I am so weary of not seeing your miracles at work. You have allowed me to minister to hundreds of thousands of people around the world and I am honored by that--but, Lord I long to see your miracles. This was kind of pathetic plea, really. I labored under the notion that somehow my natural efforts warranted some kind of supernatural response. I also incorrectly surmised that true miracles are sensational events and failed to see Him working in the simple ways.

See God in the simple...not the sensational

In the days and weeks that followed God tenderly dealt with me regarding these two false ideas. He first reminded me that my efforts, as worthy as they may be, do not deserve anything. A reminder that nothing we do gains the favor of God--it is there always--HALELUJIA! He also spoke to me softly and kindly with some penetrating questions and reminders of the journey we have been on. Vince, do remember when Cindy smiled at you when you came into the ICU? Do you remember the first time she had strength to squeeze your hand and that little tear that ran down her face? Do you recall how she came through two major surgical procedures unscathed? THAT WAS ME...THOSE ARE MY MIRACLES.

1 Kings 19:11-13; Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.

Just like Elijah, many of us tend to expect God in the BIG events and at times miss the gentle whisper. If you are navigating a tough time right now-please do not fall into that trap. Let me encourage you to consider again the Lily's of the field and the birds of the air. He is the God who controls everything and sometimes His biggest miracles are right in front of us. I do not know about you but this man is eternally grateful.

Today, Cindy had all of the telemetry (monitoring devices) removed from her room--they now are convinced her medical condition is stable and it is a matter of physical rehab from this point forward. The news is the best we have experienced thus far and no matter what the future holds we are so grateful for what God has done.
