Same Sex
Marriages
March 8, 2004
Never in the 5,000 year history of civilization
has a single society defined marriage between two members of the
same sex as the norm for family life. And now judges in black
robes are overriding state laws and public preferences by
allowing gay and lesbian couples to "marry." They are insisting
that thousands of years of human history are outdated as well as
the 1972 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that voided the ban on
interracial marriages and upheld the ban on same-sex marriages.
Because "tolerance" has become one of the highest
values in our country, a refusal to buy into the idea of
same-sex marriages seems bigoted and narrow minded. And while
tolerance is crucial in human relationships, so is an
understanding of the truth and a willingness to allow it to
govern our lives. Please remember that truth has nothing to do
with personal preference. Nor is truth bigoted. A student who
sincerely insists 2+2=5 may think his teacher bigoted and narrow
minded to mark such an answer wrong. The basis for our view
shouldn't be personal preference or opinion. It should rest on
the foundation of biblical revelation and what's best for our
country.
In the coming months and years, you're going to
hear gay and lesbians argue that the Bible doesn't condemn
homosexuality. While we live in a country that allows everyone
to have their own point of view, such thinking flies in the face
of careful biblical study or even a casual reading of such
passages as Lev. 18:22; 20:13; Genesis 19:4-8; Jude 7; Romans
1:21-32; 1 Corinthians 6:9-11; 1 Timothy 1:9-10. Now don't get
me wrong, the Bible condemns all forms of immorality (Mt. 15:19;
Mark 7:21; John 8:41; Acts 15:20, 29; Gal. 5:19-21; 1 Thess.
4:3; Heb. 13:4). The Bible doesn't condemn homosexual behavior
and condone heterosexual immorality. From God's perspective, all
sexual immorality is wrong.
In light of that biblical fact, do we want our
courts to legitimize that which God says is wrong? If the
marriage of gays and lesbians becomes public policy, not only
will we have laws that violate God's revealed morality, but the
terms "husband" and "wife" will become meaningless, as would the
words "mother" and "father." In such a world, children would
lack either a mother or a father. Activists want us to believe
that a mom and dad are no better than two moms or two dads.
Is gay marriage a civil right? If such a right is
established, on what basis can marriage be denied to any
coupling or group? How could polygamists be denied a marriage
license? Or, any group of peoples who what to marry?
Marriage is a deeply personal tie. But it's also
the bedrock of civilization that was established by God in the
garden. As followers of Christ, we cannot be quiet. We must be
heard, not as bigoted haters, but as men who love God and what
is best for the family and our country.
