Don't Be Like Hanz Blix and Hide the Smoking Gun!
March 10, 2003

Britain and the United States will today press the chief UN weapons inspector to admit that he has found a "smoking gun" in Iraq. Such an admission could persuade swing voters on the Security Council to back the March 17 ultimatum.

The British and US ambassadors plan to demand that Hans Blix reveal more details of a huge undeclared Iraqi unmanned aircraft, the discovery of which he failed to mention in his oral report to Security Council foreign ministers on Friday. Its existence was only disclosed in a declassified 173-page document circulated by the inspectors at the end of the meeting -- an apparent attempt by Dr. Blix to hide the revelation to avoid triggering a war.

At the time I'm writing this I don't know the outcome of the supposed "smoking gun." But I do know what Dr. Blix seemed to have done with the Iraqi plane, men do all the time with their private lives. We hide and cover up so that we can avoid the consequences of reality. Jeremiah noted our propensity when he said, "The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?" Ouch! That God-inspired statement hurts. The bottom line is that apart from Christ we're a self-protecting and deceitful lot.

While such truth may sting, accepting it is the first step toward a godly life. John said as much when he wrote, "If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:8-9.

Unlike Dr. Blix we need to admit the painful truth. We need to confess our sins. When we bring them into the light God performs two miracles--he not only forgives us, he cleanses us. Too bad Saddam doesn't understand the power of honest confession--it would save his life, his family, and his kingdom. Let's not make the same mistake.
