Avoid a Power
Failure
August 18, 2003
Most of us have faced the inconvenience of losing
power for a few hours or maybe even a few days. If a car battery
failed we may have been stranded. If it was a power outage due
to an ice or wind storm, we may have suffered through a dark and
cold night.
What made last week's blackout so crippling was
that it affected the major metropolitan areas in the Northeast
shutting down trains, airports, traffic, cooling systems and
even cell phones. As many as 50 million people were trapped in
subways, elevators, and office buildings. Now remember, we're
not talking about a neighborhood or city suffering a blackout,
we're talking about a massive population unable to log onto the
Internet, make a phone call, turn on an air-conditioner, use a
toaster, or do anything else that demands electricity...all of
this because an antiquated power grid failed. Seems the stress
of too much demand routed the wrong way shut down the entire
system. We won't know the exact cause for some time--or so the
experts say.
Anyway, as I watched the news I couldn't help but
think about the power needed to keep millions of believers
around the world spiritually energized. Just before he ascended
into heaven Jesus promised, "You will receive power when the
Holy Spirit comes on you..." (Acts 1:8). The fulfillment of that
promise turned the world upside down. God's Spirit transformed
cowards into warriors. It infused men with purpose, healed their
hearts, gave them victory over sin and hope for the future.
Every moment of every day hundreds of millions of
Christians are tapping into the power of God through his Spirit.
And guess what? There has never been, nor will there ever be, a
spiritual energy blackout. It can't happen because God's power
is infinite and his delivery system sure.
The next time you face a temptation,
discouragement, or a challenging opportunity--thank God that his
power never fails. And consider what it would be like if every
follower of Jesus simultaneously tapped into God's power. Maybe
tomorrow will be that day. Instead of a blackout--we'll see
revival.
